Gail Priest
Gail Priest is a Sydney-based artist with a multifaceted practice in which sound is the key material of communication and investigation. Her compositions exist in a liminal zone between song and soundscape. She is interested in exploring the timbre of the voice when filtered and effected—finding the point when it loses its ‘grain.’ She is similarly interested in the transformation of field recordings into new rhythmic and melodic material. It’s a continuing exploration of the relationship between the machinic and organic, the figurative and the abstract.
Her practice spans solo laptop performance, soundtracks for dance, theatre and video as well sound installations for gallery contexts. She is also a curator of exhibitions and concerts, including the bi-monthly gig series Pretty Gritty (2013-2017). She also has written extensively about sound and media arts for RealTime magazine and edited the book Experimental Music: Audio explorations in Australia (UNSW Press, 2009). She is the founder of Audible Women.
