Judith Shatin

Judith Shatin composes with digital, electroacoustic, multimedia and expanded acoustic technologies. Founder of the Virginia Center for Computer Music, she has created music from recordings of wooden looms (Penelope’s Song), all kinds of tape (Tape Music), of a sculptor at work (Tree Music), sounds of a working coal mine (COAL, a folk oratorio). She also combines new and traditional technologies, as in Black Moon (conductor-controlled electronics and orchestra, comm’d by Carnegie Hall for American Composers Orchestra). She also works with interactive technologies, as in Spring Tides, for amplified Pierrot Ensemble and interactive electronics. Organizations that have commissioned her music include the Barlow Endowment, Fromm Foundation, Library of Congress, National Endowment for the Arts, and many others. Educated at Douglass College (AB), The Juilliard School (MM) and Princeton University (PhD), she is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor at the University of Virginia.
